Axe is stronger if you use an axe elite, and has fewer energy costing skills than sword which will allow you to use skills from your secondary. Downside is its very reliant upon conditions to do anything.
Sword is stronger than axe if you don't use an elite, and its cripple and disrupt skills use energy instead of adrenaline, which is a mixed blessing in that you can use them right in the beginning of combat, but you probably won't get as much use out of your secondary skills. Sword can also be ok for coordinated spiking.
Despite how many people hate sword, they're both useful. If you'd like to use a non-weapon elite, swords win out. Otherwise, you should probably stick to axes.
As for spells, balthazar's spirit is awesome for warriors in pve, and judge's insight is good in general. Condition removal is pretty much a must for pve and casual pvping where you can't trust the monk.

Before it begins, please don't turn this into a sword vs. axe debate. Just focus on the skills he should be using instead.

Let's use some facts for him to make his decision.
Fact 1.
Axes do far better spike damage than swords due to the elite, Eviscerate.
Fact 2.
Swords don't need a weapon elite to do its damage and it has better dps capabilities.
That's all you need really. You want better sustained damage coupled with non-weapon elite? Sword ftw!
You want super heavy damage using minor secondary skills? Axe!

If you're a sword fan, now's the time to play with it. Battle Rage doesn't cancel out adrenaline when it ends, so you can battle rage, build up adrenaline, then frenzy and take down targets at an alarming rate.

Personally I would not go with a vampire axe if you are going axe. The degen is a killer for warriors. I usually go with sundering or furious. My opinion, just in case you are going with axe.

Zealous or Vampiric - no other. There is such a thing as weapon switching, oh yes...its not just limited to those wiley monks. So now all of a sudden...you don't have to stand around like a dolt with -1 hp regen. The 10% chance of a +10% penetration on sundering is just funny.

did this glitch occur after a recent update? because when i was using battle rage before it worked just like it was suppose to..then again i was using another skill to end it, not letting it run out on its own..
and i vote for sword on a paladin, since you probably tanking you need the elite spot for things like glads defense, warriors endurance(somethin like that), healing hands, mark of protection, something along those lines.
also: agreed that sundering is just stupid, -6, on a spell acster, armor on 1 out of every 10 is sad...furious i see as a bit more worth while, but zealous or vamp all the way. both are situational but have really nice benefits

Yeah, unfortunately I have to give up the 3 armor-piercing dmg on my warrior due to him being a conjurer. Everything is 2-sided, i guess.
And please, if we can't make this an axe v sword thread, how about a w/mo bash? Wammos are good for going it alone, since they are fairly self-contained. But since Guild Wars is all about teamwork... what's the point of having someone who can go it alone? Even with smiting, things like JI are unsustainable on wammos, where on rangers they work wonderfully.

Manfred, JI can't be used 100% of the time, but enough to make it very worthwhile. KD/holy strike is also pretty good, nice armor ignoring damage. If you're mostly pure axe warrior, smite hex is great to bring along as well.
Most importanly, monk provides condition removal for small 4v4 matches where you usually can't afford to bring 2 monks, and the 1 monk left is on full time heal duty, given, nec is better for this by far, but it doesn't provide the goodies mentioned above.

Yes, after the recent update, battle rage got glitched and only loses all adrenaline if you let it run out naturally. If you use another skill or renew it, you keep your adrenaline. Hence you can use BR to build up adrenaline and use frenzy to unload it quicker.
